About pruning

Pruning removes what the tree cannot use and what threatens something below it: deadwood, crossing limbs, growth crowding a roof or a road. The restraint matters as much as the cuts: over-thinning and topping both weaken a tree while looking, briefly, like tidy work.

You probably need this if

  • Dead limbs held up in the crown, particularly over anything you park or sit under
  • Branches touching the roof, gutters, siding, or a service line
  • A young tree with two competing leaders that will split as it puts on weight
  • The crown has thickened enough to shade out the lawn or the beds beneath it
  • Storm-broken stubs left over from a previous winter

Worth knowing before you book

We will not top a tree

Topping, meaning main leaders cut back to stubs, produces fast and weakly attached regrowth. The tree needs cutting again in a few years and is permanently less safe than before. If a tree genuinely is too big for its position, that is a conversation about removal or a staged reduction, not about topping.

Timing matters for some species

Most pruning is fine in any season, and deadwood is always fine to take. A few species are better pruned in dormancy for disease reasons. It is worth one sentence at the quote.

Structural pruning is cheapest while the tree is young

Deciding which leader a tree keeps is a small job at fifteen feet and a large one at forty. If you have young trees on the property, that is the work with the best return on it.

Questions we get asked

What does pruning cost?
We quote on site, and the quote is free. Pruning is priced by how much of the crown needs work and by how we can reach it. A young tree that can be shaped from the ground and a mature maple needing deadwood cleared over a driveway are different jobs on the same street. That is why quoting from a photograph does not work.
Will you tell me if a tree does not need to come down?
Yes, and often it does not. A defect that looks alarming from the ground is frequently something cabling or bracing will hold for years. Removal is what we recommend when a tree is genuinely failing, not as the default answer.
Is Canopy Tree Care insured?
Yes. Canopy Tree Care is fully insured. Ask for the certificate before work starts and we will send it. On any job involving climbing, rigging, or a drop zone near a building, you should be asking every contractor for it.
How do I get a quote?
