About cabling and bracing

A cable installed high in the crown lets two limbs share the strain of wind and ice instead of one union carrying all of it. Where a union has already cracked, bracing rods hold the two halves against each other, which a cable cannot do. They are usually specified together on the same tree, for different parts of the same problem, and the point of both is to keep a tree that would otherwise have to come down.

You probably need this if

  • A narrow, V-shaped union between two main stems, especially with bark trapped in it
  • A crack that has opened at a fork, or one that has widened since last year
  • A heavy limb reaching out over something you cannot move
  • A mature tree you would rather keep than replace
  • A previous split that was cut back rather than supported

Worth knowing before you book

This is an alternative to removal, not a repair

Hardware does not heal a union. It limits how far the two halves can move, which is often enough to keep a sound tree standing for years. If the defect is past that point we will say so rather than sell you a cable that postpones the same conversation.

The two do different jobs

A cable sits high in the crown and limits travel under load. A brace is a rod through the union itself, holding a split closed. Which one a tree needs, or whether it needs both, is decided at the union rather than from the ground.

It needs looking at again

The tree keeps growing around the hardware, so a system installed once is not finished forever. Plan on it being checked periodically, and tell whoever prunes the tree that it is there.

What does cabling and bracing cost?
We quote on site, and the quote is free. A support system is priced by how many points it needs and how high they sit, which is decided at the union rather than from the ground. Set against removing and replacing a mature tree, it is usually the cheaper of the two by a wide margin.
Will you tell me if a tree does not need to come down?
Yes, and often it does not. A defect that looks alarming from the ground is frequently something cabling or bracing will hold for years. Removal is what we recommend when a tree is genuinely failing, not as the default answer.
Is Canopy Tree Care insured?
Yes. Canopy Tree Care is fully insured. Ask for the certificate before work starts and we will send it. On any job involving climbing, rigging, or a drop zone near a building, you should be asking every contractor for it.
