A freshly cut tree stump on a grassy bank, its sawn face still pale, with a second cut stump behind it.

About stump removal

A stump left in place keeps sending up suckers, hosts the decay organisms that then sit beside whatever you plant nearby, and rules out replanting in the same spot. Grinding takes it below grade so the area can go back to lawn, bed, or a replacement tree.

You probably need this if

  • Shoots keep coming up around the stump however often they are cut back
  • You want to replant, turf, or level that part of the garden
  • The stump is a trip hazard, or it catches the mower every pass
  • Someone else took the tree down and left the stump behind

Worth knowing before you book

Grinding is not the same as removal

Grinding takes the stump below ground level and turns it into chip; it does not lift the whole root plate out. If you intend to replant in the exact same spot, say so at the quote. That needs going deeper and wider than a standard grind.

You are left with a hollow and a pile of chip

A ground stump leaves a depression full of woodchip. That is normal, not an unfinished job. It can be left to settle or topped with soil and seeded, and it is worth deciding which before the machine arrives.

Buried services set the limit

Gas, water, hydro and irrigation lines near a stump all constrain how a grinder can work. If you know roughly where yours run, that is genuinely useful at the quote.

Questions we get asked

What does stump removal cost?
We quote on site, and the quote is free. Stump grinding is priced by the diameter of the stump and by what the machine can get to. The same stump is one job in open lawn and another wedged between a fence and a patio, and buried services nearby change it again. That is why quoting from a photograph does not work.
Do you clear up afterwards?
Yes. Cleanup is part of the job rather than an extra line. If you want the timber left in rounds for firewood, say so when we quote; it is easy to arrange on the day and awkward once the chipper has gone.
Is Canopy Tree Care insured?
Yes. Canopy Tree Care is fully insured. Ask for the certificate before work starts and we will send it. On any job involving climbing, rigging, or a drop zone near a building, you should be asking every contractor for it.
How do I get a quote?
Call (519) 614-2719 or send a message, and we will come and look at the tree. There is no charge for the visit and no obligation after it.
What area do you cover?
Huron County and surrounding areas. If you are not sure whether you are in range, call (519) 614-2719 and ask. It is a short conversation and it saves you booking someone further away.
